Before last year, I'd never gone to a car meet despite being in the Prelude "scene" for a few years. Starting in the summer a bunch of local kids (mostly 20ish) began having meets about a mile from my house. Mostly Civics and Integras, but cool people nonetheless. I've usually been the only Prelude out there, because the few enthusiasts with them have been rebuilding them. Occasionally I'd see one here or there, but rarely saw the owners.

Fast forward to December. One night at the meet a 5th gen passes by. Sounds bad...really bad. Almost like a WRX. A few minutes later he comes back by and pulls into the parking lot. I go over and talk to him for a few minutes, and come to find out he'd just had the engine rebuilt, only the shop did a terrible job of it. He was tired of messing with it and was ready to get rid of it, maybe take it to the local junkyard or part it out. Hold on, I said. I'll buy it. I saw the lip kit and carbon fiber hood and thought if nothing else that would be worth it. We worked out a deal and, after he got a new daily and got the title released, the car became mine.

A look at the inside information sheet showed me this was one of the last Preludes ever made. The build number is 10687 and it was built in September 2001, the last month of production. So far I've found only one other 5th gen produced in that month, a Milano Red one in Oklahoma. I don't know which of us has the later one.

The car shows its age a bit. It's been wrecked and it has a bit of rust. Water has been standing in the trunk some but we're working to fix that. Doing cleaning and restoration work for now, but soon I want to swap out the zombie H22 for an H23 VTEC, as you already know. We'll be doing some other mods and restoration after it's roadworthy again.

Pics from the day it came home:

If there ever was an H23V candidate, this is it. Nice score. Not sure if it helps, but the water in my trunk is coming up through the rear shock towers because of some choice installation skills the previous owner had. Baffled me for a while until I did some unscientific experimentation.

So, which interior are you guys putting in this?

Keeping the 99-01 interior or changing it up with the 97-98 interior?

The 01 finally made it to #29 Prelude Dr. Cool

So far a good scrubbing of the existing tail light gaskets, the housings and metal surface along with black permatex has the trunk all nice and dry.
There was a skim of fine sand like stuff all over the metal and gaskets.
The true test is when it's uncovered in a deluge. Right now the car is covered in custom fit kimberly clark evolution III cloth.

The interior is solid black josh. All but the roof area. The 97 has some gray and the seats have some red-ish lines throughout.
Me personally, I would prefer to die the gray stuff black and keep the sloping accented cloth. It kinda indicates that there are a few improvements in the second half of the 5th gen cars like Honda did to the 3g cars.  Michael hasn't indicated anything yet about the interior other than de-molding the rear seat.

A good scrubbing of the rear seat will be the tale of the tape on the stay/go of the existing cloth.
Po had kept the rear seat folded down. And with a trunk full of water soaking the seatback all snuggled against the sitting area, mold spores were in utopia.  Roll Eyes

Michael whipped out a can of upholstry cleaner today with a big wide grin.
Yesssssss!

Keeping the 99-01. Other than needing a good cleaning, it's in better condition than the one in the SH, and looks better. I'll probably start taking it out once the house project is done.

Maybe by the time the snow melts the house project will be done.

I reckon the back seat is a block of ice with all that water in the sponge

So here's the full mod list as of now, since I've ID'd the short shifter with Josh's help:

AEM V2 intake
Vis hood
OEM optional lip kit
Debadged, except for a carbon fiber H badge
DC short shifter adapter
DC header
High flow cat
GReddy muffler (claimed by Josh)
Pioneer deck with aux and USB ports (probably going in my 4th gen)
Momo shift knob & boot
Sway bars, apparently

Future mods (God willing)
-phase 1 (within the next year):
H23 VTEC swap
Legend caliper conversion
Neuspeed front strut bar
DC rear strut bar
Thermal exhaust
-phase 2 (later on)
A better header
Cams
Bigger injectors
Skunk2 intake manifold (maybe)
BC coilovers
M Factory LSD
ITR wheels

First order of business was getting the water out of the trunk and resealing the tail lights. That's been a success so far. Second order has been cleaning the interior up some. The console and lower rear seats are out. Today while I've had a cold I cleaned the console for a bit.

Before:

After:

Doing the lower seats next. Hopefully ordering the H23 next paycheck.

Ordered the H23 today and made room for it in the garage. Cleaned up the rear seats too...they weren't as bad as they looked.

Selling off parts to buy other parts. I got a front crank seal the other day and hopefully buying more parts this paycheck. After I sell the red car it won't be long until I'll have everything. I have a buyer set for it but someone else offered to trade me a set of Work Emotions (same wheels Laura's car has) for it. I reluctantly declined because I'd be too tempted to keep them.
