Title: Escapenguin's '98 fif
Post by: escape on October 12, 2008, 03:32:46 pm
I cleaned the piss out of this thing today, so thought I may as well take some pictures.  Didn't go so well.  Realized I was out of tire-shine and Windex after mopping the whole thing with detail spray.  Just my luck.  So forgive the mess.

Thanks for the replies.  Yeah, it's been kinda nasty out pretty much every weekend.  Haven't really done much to the car since I got it minus maintenance.  I'll post more pics soon.  Stupid holidays...

Alas, it looks much cleaner than it actually is.  Needs a ton of work and a repaint.

I love that color. Do you know the Honda name and code for that color?

Are you keeping it the same btw?

Title: Re: Kenny's '98 fif (just pics)
Post by: escape on February 27, 2009, 08:18:20 am
I don't know the code, but it's Eucalyptus Green Pearl.  Yep, keeping it the same.  It's a rare color.  I've only seen one or two other Preludes with the same.  Goes well with the unique interior color (black and tan rather than all black).

I agree! I actually never seen a 5th gen with that color in real life. I wonder if Europe had it? hmm...

Just a little update here. I wish I had more pictures. Basically my car is back on the road after sitting for over a year. Daryl and Yosh started working on it a few months ago. After dissecting some absolutely horrific pre-owner related tragedies of astonishingly bad jury-rigged fixes, swapping in the H23V, front motor mount, fixes for the KS balance shaft delete, suspension pieces, clutch, flywheel, slave, and new rotors and brakes, it's running suspiciously well. I was really worried the Toyos would be flat-spotted from sitting for so long, yet-- so far so good.

Breaking in the clutch, timing belt, and brakes and working through some leakage with the KS kit, so I haven't really been able to put my foot in it. However, doesn't seem like you even need to with this motor...it is ridiculouslytorquey.

Now to scrape all the tint off and get it inspected...

Pads and rotors are all Centric parts.  I only use Centric parts for any car I put brakes on.

Centric -> Stoptech -> Powerslott    All the same company.  The Centric are a step above OEM in my opinion.

I forgot which lowering springs you have, the name is still on them somewhere lol.

Type-S strut tower bar is the OEM one you're referring to, I believe you have the tophats floating around somewhere too!  Now let us install them!

Rosko TB gasket and manifold gasket :)

I have the seal for that leak... unless I gave it to D to hold onto...         Dammit D, I mentioned where I put it knowing i'd forget... it's gotta be in one of my cars -__-

There are a few misc things missing, can't remember....too much done... Although I have photos from the swap for you ;)

Been replacing things on a "needed" basis.  So it's a little random as to whats bee done/upgraded.

Type S tophats
Front ES tophat bushings
Rear ES inner LCA bushings
Moog adjustable upper balljoints - front and rear

OEM parts:

front outer tie rods
all 4 lower balljoints
rear toe arms
rear endlinks
front endlinks
SH rear deck

Still need to clean/install the seats, then reassemble the rear suspension after finding the inner lca bushings and toe arm bushings completely separated - but overall it's coming along....slowly....

I wish I had saved what remains of your inner LCA bushings.... may have one - but they were completely separated, nothing holding it to the LCA and the bolt was bonded to it on one side so bad that you can barely tell where the sleeve and bolt are two different pieces.   Same with one of the rear toe arms.

Bucket of broken parts is right!    Should have 3/4 wheels on the ground by next weekend.  Looking into the water in the trunk next as we wait on a part.

On Michaels 01 the tail light gaskets had a film of fine material almost a sand dust between the gasket and the car as well as the gasket and housings. Gaskets were fine.

So we washed the paint and housings with very diluted simple green then water, washed the gaskets with very diluted dish soap and water and an old toothbrush then let them sun dry a day. On re-install day we applied black permatex to the housing, placed gasket onto housing, the applied a bead of same permatex around the outskirts and inskirts of the gasket and slapped em onto the car, set mount screws to about 30% tight to get a good bond for about an hour. Then tightened the screws after about an hour.

So far no leaks and we did it in like February. We had newer gaskets in case that didn't work.

On my 97 I put a bead of permatex in all the cracks. Looks aint there but it stopped the leaks until I get around to doing what we did to the 01. I'll do that when I do the lens mod where an aprox 2"x2" square will remain for the reverse lights and the rest red.

I'm going to start with flushing the sunroof drains.  I've had to do the hole process on mine... i know where my leak is coming from and there's nothing i can do about it without roughly $2k in repairs...

Title: Re: Escapenguin's '98 fif
Post by: the bykfixer on November 28, 2014, 04:39:25 pm
Why start with the roof drains? Water hose to the trunk yielded no wet trunk?

My 97 came with what appears like a parking lot incident next to the tail lamp. Looks like somebody with a very blunt hatchet took a few whacks at it.

Permatex filled the gap it left. At 45mph nobody sees it. But more than a cursory glance reveals my handy work.

Guess I'm lucky the whole thing didn't fall apart at once while I was driving. These things run too well when they're in bad shape.

Hmm. We replaced the taillight gaskets once already. Water still kept getting in so we tightened them up a bit. I yanked out the trunk liner because I didn't want it to get moldy. Then noticed when I'd drive in the rain, and let the trunk dry, there were dirty water trails on the shock towers like it was coming up through the top mounts and dribbling down inside. Water didn't seem to get in when the car was sitting and it was raining, but I didn't really check it consistently to rule out it being something else too. So it wouldn't surprise me if the sunroof drains or something else was causing it.

If a drain has a hole in it or is clogged, water will run down the outside of the drain tube and lay wherever it ends up.

Bled clutch again.

Need to take it for a test drive to see if the alternator and power steering belts are good (no squeals) and get the car aligned sometime within the next week.

yeah... that thing was cracked in 2 or 3 places, and broke off right away

There was no stretch left in the rubber, completely dried out and brittle.

I hope to head down tomorrow right after work.  Maybe get the car on a little road test.

Nearly forgot, lost a valve cover washer beneath the intake manifold...somewhere.... but it's ok!  There was this spare we found in the transmission during the swap, so I made sure it got used LOL

Amazing what a little deep breath can get ya.

Money well spent fellas. Job well done.
But being a DEPOG car, no big shock on my end.
Business as usual.

bled the clutch
flushed the brakes - although i'd like to do the rears again

New battery is here, however need to swap the steering wheel before installing it

trunk is loaded up with....everything....

Check crank bolt
swap steering wheel
re-bleed rear brakes
strap up drivers ballast

i'd like to get a few more miles on the car, but we'll see.

Steering wheel is swapped
bled the rear brakes again - much better, had too many bubbles first time
hit the crank bolt with the tq gun - didn't want to go to hard
new battery installed

Have been curious as to why the turn signal and wiper stems had play - turns out the one screw holding them on was loose - tightened that and realized this wasn't the first time the steering wheel had been removed.  Airbag connector was installed backwards, wires not clamped on, pry marks around the trim and the airbag itself wasn't pressed all the way in....       All fixed now...

Another random- this car has a remote trunk popper installed, but no idea how it's controlled (half finished setup for a future alarm from previous owner?)

Kenny - One thing i did find a off that you should keep an eye on, if not get a second opinion once you have the car back - is the balance on the rear passenger wheel.   When the wheel is off, it falls over and will not stand on its own.  Pressure on all 4 is good and no signs of wear on any

Securing the headlight ballast and maybe some more road testing are all that remains.

Yeah, the car has some janky remote it came with and it only half-worked or made the car do weird s**t. Thought I'd gotten everything he'd installed, but forgot about the popper.

Doesn't surprise me about the steering wheel. He probably had some Fast and the Furious s**t on there and put it back on before trading it in.

Had no idea about the wheel. That's a little odd.

Was pretty cool to see the dyno pull :)

Every time I check this site there are 10 guests and 1 member. Sometimez it's 14 guests...

Ok so where am I going with that?

10 Government agencies are spying on Kenny, that's where...it's always 10 people watching. Coincidence? I think not. 8)

I wish it was something that interesting. It's mostly a steady stream of bots and crawlers.

Finally got to drive 'er.  :loco: Almost feels brand new, which was really weird to experience. I'm incredibly grateful for Josh and D basically overhauling the whole damn car, and everyone else helping with parts, etc. I'll update the mod list soon.

Heh, yeah. Should work with the tophats. But we'll see I guess. If I have to get another one it's no big deal.
